On February 11, 2020, the World Health Organization announced an official name for the disease that is causing the current outbreak of coronavirus disease, COVID-19. CDC has been updating the website and other CDC materials to reflect the updated name.
History:
In December 2019, an outbreak of COVID-19, an acute respiratory illness
caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 also known as 2019-nCoV)
was detected in mainland China. Researchers have been tracking the spread of the virus, have developed a diagnostic test for 2019-nCoV and are working on a number of vaccines to protect against 2019-nCoV .

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) leads NIH's research and response on coronaviruses.
